Philosophy statement
_
Knowledge is the driving force that empowers me to want to teach and continue to learn. It is my love of knowledge and the desire to share and empower students to be successful members of the nursing profession that has continued feeding my desire to teach nursing. Being able to bridge that gap from student to professional nurse is an important avenue that brings success to our profession. To have a better understanding of how this passion developed in me, I have developed my own philosophy of teaching.
As I look back on the years I have practiced, I continue to model the theorist, Jean Watson. The caring actions taken by nurses as they interact with one another is encouraging and worthy of imitation. It is this interaction, the building of relationships, a common bond of respect and exuding a high degree of harmony that I want to model. Being involved in this process has developed into the desire to educate.
I believe to be an effective educator one must have a solid knowledge base along with a life-long learning desire. I plan to continue to learn and explore the evolving changes that impact the lives of our communities. To be a successful teacher I must possess respect and honesty in my approaches and deliverance of knowledge. By remaining available and open to the students and peers I will build relationships that strengthen me. I believe that each student should have the chance to succeed; ensuring that success is the responsibility of both the student and the educator. I believe it is a collaborative effort on behalf of the educator and students. We are a team and it will be my job to elevate them to the next level, which in turn continues promoting self-growth.
The atmosphere in which we conduct our teaching experience is just as important as the education itself. I would like to offer students an environment that promotes honesty, caring, respect and nurturing and a classroom filled with enthusiasm, interactive opportunities and humor. My classroom will have the atmosphere of openness and respect for sharing difficulties, differences of opinions and successes. My goal is to successfully educate in an empowering environment that promotes evidence-based learning, cultural respect and diversity. It is an important role of the educator to be aware of the varied needs and diversity of their students. Alternate teaching strategies should be explored to connect with this diversity to ensure success.
My goal as an educator is to be the individual that the students are comfortable seeking out. Being open and honest will promote respect and lasting relationships. Caring for individuals and empowering them are key elements in my philosophy. Providing them the avenue to achieve success in their journey is my goal. My personal joy and fulfillment as a successful educator lies in my ability to be effective and caring. The standards I have set for myself will reflect the philosophy statement in which I am employed, as I continue to strive and allow for the best experiences for the students while assisting them in their transition from student to novice nurse. The reason we are here is to teach, to learn, and to succeed. I still feel personal joy when I have had the opportunity teach students and watch them grow as individuals.
