letter of reference I
September 11, 2012
To Whom This May Concern:
I was honored when Carmen Potter asked me to write a letter of reference. The instructions provided states the letter will help to serve as “a forum to showcase personal achievements and to demonstrate current qualifications in preparation for certification as a nurse educator”. What an easy assignment.
I have known Carmen Potter for the past 27 years. As the Assistant Director of Emergency services I was Carmen’s supervisor from 1998 thru 2010 while she worked as a staff nurse and charge nurse in the department until she left to pursue other endeavors. Prior to becoming her supervisor, we worked as staff nurses in two hospitals.
I remember when I first met Carmen. She was a staff nurse on the medical floor. During these years I continuously saw progress and growth as she maneuvered masterfully through various aspects of nursing. . She later became manager of the unit. Carmen has served many years as staff nurse and transitioned to various management roles. I believe the mixtures of skills acquired during the formative years helped to form Carmen into the outstanding role model she is today. Working many years providing patient care allowed her to understand how to deal with patients, family and staff.
Carmen continued to grow and I continued to see unlimited potential. I can only believe I had some influence in her returning to school to pursue the passion for education that she demonstrated over the years. As nursing evolved and requirements for educating staff requires degree prepared nurses to serve in the roles, I started to push Carmen to return to school to obtain the degree necessary to continue the path she was already paving. About two year ago she accepted the challenge. She have actually been an educator for over half of her nursing career as I have seen her mentor new nurses, demonstrate new skills, explain procedures, and educate families.
This is not my typical two to three paragraph reference because the positive things I have to say about Carmen are unlimited. However, I do not want to take away from the purpose- Carmen’s qualifications. Carmen is highly intelligent. She has excellent computer skills (an additional asset for the trend of electronic documentation). She has good analytical and communication skills. She has good writing skills necessary for effective documentation. She can quickly diagnose problems and devise rapid solutions, remaining unflustered during highly stressed situations. Staff respects her opinions and often went to her for advice. Her interpersonal and communication skills have allowed her to form positive working relationships with patients, coworkers and staffs in other ancillary departments. I believe she knows when to listen and when to voice opinions. She is dependable and one of the most “on time” persons I have known. Carmen maintains current certifications including Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS), Trauma Nurse Core Course (TNCC), Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS), Emergency Nursing Pediatric Course (ENPC), and a former Trauma Nurse Specialist (TNS). Carmen always wanted to stay current with latest educational updates and often took it upon herself to attended continuing education classes. The list goes on and on.
I am happy to know that Carmen will be doing what she loves with a passion. I know no better candidate to fulfill educational requirements for those entering or continuing in the nursing field. The institution lucky enough to acquire Carmen as part of their staff will definitely have an asset.
If I can be of further assistance, please do not hesitate to contact me.
Sincerely
